Financial Life Skills for Student-Athletes: Managing Money for a Secure Future

For years, the focus for student-athletes has been strictly on the field, the court, and the classroom. However, as the landscape of sports evolves—with Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals and changing NCAA rules—financial literacy has become an absolute necessity. Whether you are a high school standout preparing for college or a collegiate athlete navigating your first endorsement deal, understanding how to manage money is the ultimate game-changer.

At the Student Athlete Success Summit (SASS), we recognize that true success isn’t just about athletic milestones; it is about building a secure foundation for life. Our mission is to educate, empower, and elevate student-athletes and their families by providing the financial life skills they need to thrive long after the final whistle blows.

Why Financial Literacy Matters for Student-Athletes

Statistics show that a significant percentage of professional athletes face financial distress shortly after retirement. But you don’t have to go pro to experience money troubles. Student-athletes often face unique financial pressures, from the costs of travel teams and equipment to the sudden influx of NIL funds. Without proper financial life skills, it is easy to fall into the traps of overspending, predatory contracts, and poor investments. By learning to manage money early, student-athletes can turn short-term athletic success into long-term generational wealth.

1. Master the Basics of Budgeting

The foundation of all financial success is a solid budget. A budget is simply a plan for your money. As a student-athlete, your schedule is incredibly demanding, making it easy to lose track of where your money is going. Start by dividing your income (whether from a part-time job, allowance, or NIL deals) into three main categories:

  • Needs: Essential expenses like food, gas, and school supplies.
  • Savings: Pay yourself first. Aim to save at least 10-20% of any money you receive.
  • Wants: Non-essential items like entertainment, dining out, or the latest gear.

Tracking your expenses for just one month will give you a clear picture of your spending habits and help you identify areas where you can cut back.

2. Understand the Difference Between Saving and Investing

Saving money in a bank account is great for emergencies and short-term goals, but it won’t make you wealthy over time due to inflation. Investing, on the other hand, allows your money to grow through the power of compound interest. While student-athletes should prioritize building an emergency fund with 3-6 months of living expenses, it is never too early to learn the basics of investing. Understanding index funds, mutual funds, and retirement accounts like a Roth IRA can set you up for a financially independent future.

3. Beware of Lifestyle Creep and Sudden Wealth

If you secure an NIL deal or a professional contract, the sudden influx of cash can be intoxicating. “Lifestyle creep” happens when your expenses increase as your income increases. Just because you can afford a luxury car doesn’t mean you should buy one. The most successful athletes live below their means. They treat their income as a tool to build wealth, not just a ticket to a flashy lifestyle. Surround yourself with financial advisors and mentors who will give you honest, unbiased advice.

4. Protect Yourself from Financial Predators

Unfortunately, people will try to take advantage of athletes. From shady agents to “friends” asking for loans, student-athletes must have their guard up. Never sign a financial or marketing contract without having it reviewed by an independent attorney or a trusted financial professional. If an opportunity sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Equip Yourself at the Student Athlete Success Summit

Financial literacy isn’t taught in most schools, but it is critical for student-athletes. That is why the Student Athlete Success Summit is committed to bridging this gap.
